I have seen something like this before and it is a wonderful way to grow plants as well as recycle unused glass bottles and jars. I've started many plants over the years with mason jars and always love the way the roots look once the plant starts to grow. I've also put colored marbles into the jar which really enhances the look.

Firelily99, I completely agree, roots can look really pretty. I'm fond of them too. Glass jars and bottles also are decorative.
Look at this picture, isn't it pretty? I'd fill these jars with water though.

I've decided that glass jars are best used for creating terrariums. You could also use them with just water and pebbles for regrowing spring onion or sprouting tulips. I may try one for rooting carrot tops; I want to grow some as food for the swallowtail butterflies so I can preserve by parsley from the larvae this year.

Growing green onions in a jar is a very good idea, ChanellG!:) It's practical, but it also looks really nice. I find it pretty.
Here is a picture:

I have some in a cup in the kitchen right now! I need to trim them so they can grow out once more and then it will be time to compost them. The ones in the picture look like they have been regrowing for about 1 week.

ChanellG - so green onions grow very quickly?:)
Scotkat - I'm sure they look beautiful!:) Can you take a picture of them?

I really want to start growing tulips in a glass jar. If only tulips bloomed more often!
