A fiber glass net is used on various fruit trees to deter bird damage. Fiber glass is very tough and is usually kept in place using plastic ties. It is not large enough to cover completely but does offer some protection. The typical net sold in hardware stores is basically useless. It tangles the birds and snags too easily. A perfect net is expensive so this is a compromise.

while the carbon in the polymer offers extended material life, it produces a higher emission of heat which sounds good but its equal and opposite is the absorption of heat. I remark on seeing white netting so commonly, but then shade cloth is so often black.
