I really wish my volunteers (all sunflowers +1 asparagus not pictured) would grow where I have given them a warm, nurturing environment. Instead, they like the hard, salty, Casa Grande series soil.

Sunflowers (Helianthus annuus) must like your well-drained gritty native soil, and are tolerant of any accompanying alkalinity. Hopefully you'll have an colorful thicket of blooming Sunflowers, come Summer.

In my garden, I'm carefully stepping around several plants (Lupinus vestitus, Sparaxis tricolor, etc.) that are blooming brightly in the pathways. I didn't want to trample them, but I will try to collect more of their seed this year and set it in a more convenient spot.
The very edge of the pathways would work fine for me.
