I have done this for years too, and during the winter I collect my used coffee ground in a can. Then I just dump them right on top of the soil whenever I see the surface of it. When it is time to work in the garden, I just try to mix it up a bit. One good thing I also found about used coffee ground is that the smell is really strong and it helps kept stray cats out of my garden area as their litter box.
