Hey everyone 🤗

So a few years ago my grandad planted flowers in a couple of planters we got (can't remember what they were I think geraniums maybe 🤔) and he used to look after them. About a year we got a puppy and let's just say they didn't last long.
Now that doggo is a bit older I want to spruce up them up a bit unfortunately grandad passed away a couple of years ago and he was the one who loved his garden. We do not have green fingers in anyway so just looking for something to put in the planters that doesn't take much looking after, can cope with a fair bit of sunlight (when we actually get some 😂) and is dog friendly. Any suggestions? (I'm in the UK btw not sure if that helps 😅)

Welcome @ruffledroses. Nice looking dog!

Geraniums would be a good choice. Daylilies would work nice there...many different varieties to choose from...and very low maintenance. Plant what you like.

Pelargoniums, often wrongly referred to as geraniums, are a good choice, the 'zonal' ones have attractive leaves as well as flowers. They come in red, white and pink, are easy to grow , and propagate from cuttings easily so they are not dear. The only thing is the leaves are scented, especially if brushed against. I find it a pleasant smell, but not everyone does. I add lobelia to them, they grow easily from seed and make straggling long plants that are not great on their own, but their sprawling habit and blue colour is a good contrast peeping out between the pelargoniums, and they will self seed to go with the Autumn cuttings you take for next year..

Those boxes are also deep enough that you could do a double plant in Autumn for next Spring, with tulip bulbs in the lower part, they come first, and daffodils in the upper part to follow on.

Daffodils are toxic to dogs. Check on-line for toxic potential before you plant anything. Pelargoniums and Geraniums are safe. The list of toxics is much shorter than the list of safe.
