Hi fellow gardeners, this is my first post on this site, I'm looking forward to joining your helpful community. I have a question regarding potted fig trees. I bought a potted fig tree from a private seller last year, and was told the tree was 2 or 3 years old. It didn't produce fruit this year and given that, I don't know if I need to prune the new growth. I can see it has been grafted and those shoots are just establishing now, I don't think they should be pruned, but what about the other branches. I was hoping to report in a larger pot, should I prune first then repot? And is winter best for that once leaves fall? Thanks so much everyone.

Welcome. I'm a fig grower also but not in pots/containers. They have a large root ball so one would need a large container.

I do light pruning after the fruit has ripened and any heavy pruning in winter. Fruit is born on the previous season’s growth, so it's best to avoid removing those terminal branches. If re-potting, I would do that in winter and prune first then re-pot.

What type of figs are you growing?

Hi Meadowlark, thanks for your reply to my question, I appreciate your advice, i will apply those principles you have suggested. Yes, ideally the figs would be better in the ground but i don't have that luxury, unfortunately, going to try and find a large pot or half barrel if i can, at least 100 litres or so. I actually don't know the variety of fig, i was told it was a sweet green/yellow fig, so I am assuming it's probably a 'White Adriatic'
