How should I fertilize potatoes?

I tested the soil and the pH was very high so I added sulfur to lower the pH level before I planted potatoes. Some of the potatoes didn't sprout and they rotted in the ground. Should I have added more fertilizer? This was my first time growing potatoes.

Did you coat the potatoes with sulfur or wood ashes before planting? This keeps them from rotting. Fertilizer or lack of had nothing to do with them rotting. Overwatering will also cause this
