Hi,

Wondering if anyone could help identify this Helianthus for me? I'm trying to work out how difficult it is going to be to get rid of!

It arrived with another plant from a friends garden, was lovely last year but seems to have spread everywhere and into the neighbors as well

Wotcha Rob :)

Looks like Jerusalem Artichoke, Helianthus tuberosum.

They're a bugger to get rid of, they can also give you a bad bottom and make you windy

You have to dig out every tuber or they'll come up again. Some folk try to keep them in ring cultures but they don't know the rules and get straight under and out.

Only way I got rid of them was by having the plot flooded for a month

Hey Zigs! Thank you for your response.

I was thinking it looked like a Jerusalem Artichoke from the leaves/flower, but was hoping it wasn't as the roots looked slightly different... more 'hoping' than anything :(

I've dug out the main bulk of it now, but can't get every last piece of tiny root as it's spread everywhere. Hoping it's enough, but I imagine they'll be popping up again shortly.

I'll try putting in a bit of a barrier further along the border to stop spread and try flooding if I have to!

Thanks again

I do have some Lemon Queen in another part of the garden, which seems to be a bit taller & bushier!

So far that hasn't spread too much, just formed large clumps. Hopefully it stays that way :D

Rob, I hope that was in fact a friend - and not someone getting their own back on you for some previous misdemeanour 🥴 If it actually was a proper friend, maybe you should warn them. If you happen to need revenge, there's always Japanese knotweed 😈
