I decided to purchase a small lighted herb dome this year so I'd have a little bit of growing to tend to over the winter since I can't have plants out in the house due to two bad kitties! I planted some assorted herbs in it in June, and they took off wonderfully and I was able to have regular small harvests.
Once the weather started getting colder outside, things started slowing down and I had to cut most everything back as leaves started to yellow and fall off. I tried planting some new herbs but nothing has really taken or died off rather quickly, whereas in the summer I had to keep cutting because everything was growing so fast! I've tried doing my own research and my only guess is the temperature - although the difference between now and the summer really isn't that much with air conditioning/heaters.
I'm including a couple of photos of - any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated!

Yes it is OK to let the soil go dry at times...many herbs originate from hot, dry, sunny climates and not only tolerate, but welcome a little drought.

I had a cat that loved digging around in my house plants. Honestly, having cats should not ever mean you have to compromise...and I say this as a dog and cat owner. You just need to get a bit creative. For that particular cat, I bought a Super-Soaker. :D He got near a plant, he got blasted with water. It just took a few tries, and because I could nail him from across the room he never associated it with me. I have other useful strategies. Some include toothpicks. o_O

You have to get smarter than your cats. ;) They have brains the size of jumbo grapes, so really it should not be that difficult.

The plants are reaching for light. That is why they are a bit leggy. If your soil is any indication of the amount of water being provided you are providing way to much. Herbs like it on the drier side of wet, especially when they are indoors. You must remember that the amount of sunlight are shrinking every day.
