The name amaryllis comes from a Greek legend. Amaryllis was a nymph who fell hopelessly in love with the handsome shepherd Alteo, but he showed no interest in her. He was only interested in flowers. On the advice of the oracle of Delphi, she visited his cottage daily, piercing her heart with an arrow so drops of blood fell to the ground. A bit more veg. trivia than flower, but still ...
I had always wondered who Ailsa Craig was. It is a very nice heritage tomato and I assumed it was named after some gardener, or his wife. I looked it up a little while ago, it is a large island in the mouth of the river Clyde in Scotland, and the tomato was bred in a nursery that overlooks it. The island has a quarry on it which is the sole source of a special, very fine texture granite, which all curling stones are made from.
