Only 10 percent of the 369,000 flowering plants are blue. This makes blue the rarest flower color.

The Austrian monk, Gregor Mendel, bred species of pea and bean that came true and were distinguishable, for example, wrinkled and smooth, or dwarf and giant. By crossing them and counting the proportions of each in the following (F1 and F2) generations he worked out that complete units of information, chromosomes he called 'factors', were passed on to the offspring. This was years before Darwin proposed evolution, but was still wondering why it was that when a bird with a red breast and one with a white breast bred the offspring did not have a pink breast.
His aim was to provide better seed for the peasants. Eventually he lost his sight from the close work removing stamens and covering flowers in tiny bags to be sure which plant pollinated which, by that time he had moved on to hawkweeds which display some curious characteristics, but have very small flowers.
