Slightly off point, I remember my brother telling me about someone who got his PHD identifying different species of blackberry growing wild in England. I can't remember how many, but there were a lot of them, and he did it by counting stamens on flowers of individual plants. Apparently they are consistent and breed true, but what a fiddly and difficult job that must have been.
