Hi. I often see cedars planted in the streets around here, which I suspect are Hesperocyparis lusitanica (white cedar).
I have to confess that cedars are pretty low in my favorites rating because I fail to see the purpose they fulfill in a ecosystem. Don't see either birds perching on them or insects visiting them (no flowers, after all) and they produce no edible fruits for anyone. Although they are seemingly good for wood production, it's kind of sad having to log them to get any utility for them.

Now because at least the white cedar is native to here, I don't want to be unnecessarily harsh. Do you know about functions or roles that cedars can fulfill within a larger system, or other plants or trees which positively interact with them?

We have numerous Eastern Red Cedar here in East Texas. I like them and find them especially useful for long lasting fence posts...just cut and delimb and post. No cost, no chemicals very useful.

Locally milled red cedars are prized wood for the appearance, pleasant odors, and longevity.

As to the big picture, here they serve in excellent soil erosion control, wildlife food and shelter, and windbreaks. They get an undeserved bad rep IMO.
