A short rant. Every year (except one) I lose my pumpkins to the squash vine borer. I've tried foil, dusting but nothing works. A couple of years ago, I read an article that said to plant them at the beginning of July because the vine borer moths have finished laying their eggs and moved on. So, I planted two pumpkins on July 3rd. When they got about a foot long, I hit them with Dipel dust. By August 15th, the borers had killed them.
I'll be trying again next year.

You're probably aware but rotation is critical to managing those critters. They remain in the soil long after you've grown any vining plant. It is also important to remove and destroy all vines from the area. The soil that has grown any Cucurbitaceae should be deep tilled...sorry no dig fans...to kill the eggs that remain long after the plant is gone.

Thanks. They were in a new spot and I killed the grubs that were in them.
