Hi all,

My onion seedlings look a bit ropey. I transplanted them into bigger pots from propergators 2 weeks ago and although 1 or 2 have developed second sprouts, some look browned and floppy.

Is this normal or am I doing something wrong? I mist them every other day and leave them in conserve right now. It's UK spring weather.

Hi

Thank you for your response. When you say starved do you mean of water?

Feed onions Ammonium Sulfate fertilizer 21-0-0 keep them in full sun. Are they long day, short day or medium day onions? What is you day length in UK on June 21? If you are growing short day onions in short day zone you will have good onions. I you are growing long day onions in long day zone you will have good onions. Same for medium day onions. Try to get 10 to 14 onion leaves by June 21 then switch to a different fertilizer 0-20-20 to grow BIG bulbs.

If you grow the wrong onions in the wrong zone you only get green onions with no bulbs. Your really need to start seeds inside or in a green house 2 months before transplanting them outside. Onions are tricky to grow they need, lots of sun, lots of correct fertilizer, cool weather, lots of water.

Moist is good enough. When starting, the water soluble ferts are a weak form and nitrogen often suffers. Sprinkle 1.25 mL per plant and see.

I grow a lot of short-day onions (well over 200 pounds per year). I would be very cautious about using ammonium sulfate on them...in fact I wouldn't do it. Each soil location is somewhat unique but if you want big onions, i.e. big bulbs then a lot of nitrogen isn't desirable as it promotes the leaves. I only use fish emulsion on my onions and grow many in excess of two pounds....but as noted each soil location is somewhat unique on onions.

Are you growing only 4 onions? Best way to grow onions from 250 seeds in a 12" diameter pot inside the warm house 2½ months before last frost. Transplant onions to garden 1 month before last frost. You need full Sun and 70°F in the house or you have no onions.
