Not really a garden picture, but this guy seems to think there is food behind my window. Too me a few weeks to locate the nose my wife kept complaining about. For some reason he keeps coming back to the same spot.

There's every possibility he can see his reflection in the window and thinks it's a prospective mate. :)

Or a rival to be driven from his territory!! :cautious:

Woodpeckers are strange, though. We had a downy woodpecker that drummed on our downspout three or four times a day for about a month before he gave up.

They are strange, one drilled a perfect round hole in the column on my front porch, right after we had just got done building it, out of all places (I live by woods)...the sparrow took over and have been nesting there for the last few years, I kinda like that

@vette-kid, I imagine he'll break the window before he hurts himself! They've been studying woodpeckers for a few years now, trying to figure out how to build better helmets for football players. (y)

Not endangered (yet,) but probably on the decline, one mated pair wants a forest territory of 150 acres or larger. This is an interesting site!! The next time you are watching an old Tarzan movie...the "monkeys" in the background...that's the call of the pileated woodpecker!! :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for that. Did some reading and it appears he is an Ivory billed woodpecker. The red cockaded woodpecker is on the endangered last in Florida but not this guy I guess. http://www.timesoftheislands.com/20...-this-woodpecker-is-now-endangered-in-florida .
Although from other sights I get the impression that sightings are rare. I see this guy almost every day! There does seem to be a bit of confusion between the Florida fish and wildlife site and the one posted by @MaryMary I need a better look at him.

 Your first link says that the ivory billed woodpecker is believed to be extinct.

And the picture from the second shows the ivory billed woodpecker with black on the top of its head.

I'm getting conflicting info there. Looks like they thought it was extinct, but now believe it may have survived. At least according to the Florida site. Hard to know which is true

I think you are correct though, my bird appears to have a white chin. It must be the pileated woodpecker.

Don't you find that there's far too much on cameras these days?

I've a Lumix DMC TZ60. Which has all sorts of "apps" as well as wifi, which I've never used.
It's just as easy to plug it into your laptop to download the contents.

I like the fact that the zoom works well and you can close in on a subject whilst videoing it.

But other than taking "snaps" I've no other uses for it. It has a Leica lens so the pictures come out really well.
Hi Sean. I'm into cameras/photography etc. At present I use an Olympus DSLR, as I am into plant pathology and plant sciences. I also use digital camera devices on all of my microscopes. I get a lot of pleasure and satisfaction, being able to refer back to photos 'I' took. I agree so much is today available on the internet. I have a good library of books om my science subjects. At a click in the keyboard I can instantly view a wealth of info.. Hey the internet is down, lights have gone out!!!! Thank goodness I have those photos, those books of mine.

Saen my friend, kkep using your camera. Best wishes.

We had hoot owls trying to get any cat too stupid to hide last night. Not sure just what kind of owl, I just heard the classic “whoo hoo” sounds from a pair near the house. I know we have barn owls, I identified great horned owls last year, plus what ever else may be in my area. We get a wide variety of birds, hawks, a bald eagle on occasion, wood peckers, lots of song birds. I had to creep down the drive yesterday as the robins and sparrows were busy hunting bugs.
