When and how do i prune a tree?

My apple tree is all over the place. Id like to trim it up and bit and make it look a little more undercontrol.

What time of year is a good time to cut back trees? How much do I cut back and is there a proper way to do it? Or do I just cut until it looks nice?

We trim our trees 2 times a year. Once in the spring and once in the fall. I found this info about trimming, it has pictures and everything:

That tells you everything you ever need to know. Thank you so much. The pictures made the descriptions make so much sense. I have a few more weeks before winter really sets in and the tree goes dormant. As soon as that happens I am ready to get to chopping a few. This will get my tree so much easier to deal with.
