Beautiful roses!
@Nili, are they blooming now? Do roses in India have a dormant period?
I grow several small roses at home.
The Bengal rose (Rosa indica var. Semperflorens Curt. (R. bengalensis Pers.)) Is my favorite. But even this rose has a dormant period now and loves to be kept cool in winter.
But this rose has been living in the houses of Russia since 1789, it came to us from India. Perhaps the Bengal rose has adapted to our conditions during this time. It is winter cool, short daylight hours and little sun. But this rose blooms from spring to autumn, without interruption and has a light pleasant scent.

What are the names of some of the Rosa cultivars that are grown in India? I imagine many of them are different than the roses grown in temperate areas.

Hello Marck,

Belated Christmas wishes!

Glad you asked. This is my cue. Indian cultivars are called 'Desi'. Meaning 'native'. Most of the Desi breeding here is done at Indian Agri or Horti Institutes. Yet, you can find many Independent breeders as well. Rose became famous during Moghul period. Barbar and Shah Jahan popularized them creating 'Bhaaghs'. Meaning 'parks'. Later, during the British period, England rose varieties were imported. And they spread.

The classic rose is the Red Rose

Here, I would like to mention latest Desi 'Arka' series bred at Indian Institute of Horticultural Research. 'Arka' meaning 'rays'.

Your Desi roses are beautiful. I would imagine that such roses would be popular in many warm and tropical regions.
I read that many are fragrant as well, which is a trait I find essential in roses. I'll see if I can find some cultivars available in the U.S.
