You can but it will be a loose hedge. You will have to prune a lot after it establishes so it will take a long time to really get shaped properly. Have you got 5 years of gardening left?

I lost a nice rose of sharon to some fungus that rotted out the base. Most to all of the rose of sharon around the area where lost to the same thing.

Lilac?
Frosynthia?
Spirea?
Azaila?

Any random bush and let something like wisteria or honeysuckle take over?

Well my Rose of Sharon started blooming on July 4th and still has some blooms on it now. I'm not sure how long it will keep blooming because we have always cut it like a hedge and haven't really seen it bloom in many years. This year we decided to let it grow and bloom. I'm also not sure how fast it will grow up for you.

Ours is a very old variety as it came from my mamaw so you probably wont find it anywhere. It is at least 30 years old. The flowers are white with a red central color.
