Now that our lovely 6 cooler months are here I'm going to build a few 2 foot high garden beds using 20 year old treated pine sleepers.

Before putting the well cooked compost into the beds is it recommended to remove the grass first or with the grass not having any access to sunlight would the grass die.

Also whats a cheap and easy way to fill the beds so I don't need to use 2 feet of compost.
If possible I'd like a foot of compost up at the top so theres less beding over to tend to the beds.

The picture is of my beds I had 20 years ago and for the new beds I'm using the same pine sleepers and the beds are going to be twice as long.

My 15 year old garden buddy Charlie is eager to get busy helping to build the beds :).

The grass will die, I'd mix a healthy amount of topsoil in it

What are winter crops where you're at
