I live in a suburb of Houston TX. Every year I buy an English thyme plant and plant it a pot on my patio which gets afternoon sun.

It never does well - leaves are tiny and growth is stunted. I use good quality potting soil.

What do you suggest I do differently?

Thyme requires a minimum of 6 hours direct sunlight and it also requires fertilizer.

Thyme likes a Mediteranian environment. Low fertility and soil (like sandy soil) that dries out quickly. All day sun, dry conditions and very mild fertilization. You are most likely watering too much, have it in too fertile soil and depriving it of strong all day sunlight.
