I am an avid gardener with years of experience. But I can’t identify what’s wrong with my friends wisteria. I’m looking for an expert opinion. Thx! It has green and yellow spotting. If it was just yellow I would think nutrient deficiency or something like that, but I’ve never seen the yellow and green together like that before.

There are two very mature wisteria plants next to each other. On one side the leaves are above, on the other side on the other plant, the leaves look like this.

Greetings, welcome to the Forums.

This might be Wisteria Vein Mosaic Virus. It can spread by pruning equipment. Was the vine pruned by 'professionals' last season or so?
It is incurable. Some say to just ignore it, but that will lead to more virus-infected plants. The Wisteria expert, Peter Valder recommends destroying infected plants for this reason. Also perhaps take a sample to your local California Ag Inspection Department. They should have more information available to give you.

You will want to rule out the possibility of a nutrient deficiency. Give it a feeding in late Winter with a fast-acting complete fertilizer, preferably with low Nitrogen, and see how the new growth looks.

The leaf shown in the second post may or may not be similarly afflicted. Do fertilize it as well.

You are spot on! It definitely is the wisteria vine mosaic virus. My friend’s husband was just using trimmers on that plant and many other plants. I had never heard of this virus before I looked it up. Thank you so very much for your expert advice!

Good luck with this. This virus sounds like it could become a serious horticultural problem.
