A chainsaw is not the tool to use because the dirt will dull it in a few minutes and it will not cut. As suggested a reciprocating saw the way to go. It will cut through anything including steel but not rock. You may not think that you will ever use it again but I still use mine which I bought to the 70's and when I need it there is no substitute for it. Spend the money now and you'll be glad you did. You can get one for as little as $22 dollars at places like Harbor Freight and Walmart.

Two companies which do not trade in the UK. Cheapest one I could find here was over £100 . If I ever need to cut wood again (which I hope is never) I will ring my son in law and ask him to visit with his collection of power tools. He can have the pleasure.

Ya'll don't have rent a centers there? Here in the states we could go to thr rent a center and rent a sawsall with blades too.

Shoot we could even rent a nice portable back hoe to dig the root up with.

Now if it was my wife and she said do it and don't spend any money doing so I would hand her the tool and say have at it.

:D Al
