I'm also thinking about burying the bucket so it doesn't dry out so fast. Do you see any problems with that? Never buried a bucket and planted out of it before.
That is basically how I grow my watermelons, cantaloupe, honeydews and pumkins. This will be my third season doing this. Worked so well I added 4 more beds at ground level. They are 17" tall. I have sandy soil so no drainage issues which is important. This setup is used to hold the soil, fertiler and moisture better. It also allows me to grow more plants witout it drying up.

I would suggest cutting out the bottom at minimum. Give it a try, only one way to find out.

More pics for your reference. Practically all sand so a dirt pile will wash away. The chips are filler since I get them for free. Buried in soil I think would be better.

It was inedible...a junk hybrid.

How did your cantaloupe in a bucket turn out?
Thanks for the update. Well at least you tried.

I haven't tried the canteloupe in a buried bucket yet. A relative gave me some unknown variety of canteloupe seed late season so I decided to start those and I just planted them in the ground since I haven't time or a place to stick it yet. Those are doing fine at this point but the problems ususally persue about harvest time here. I'm hoping it is a resistant type of whatever the problem is here.
