How do you know it is the correct time for YOU to plant sweet corn?
We always have 6 days of rain every week Feb until May then I try to plant corn about May 10. When night time temperatures are 65° and soil temperatures are 65°, days are 90°+ and soil is dry enough to till, and no rain in forecast for a whole week I plant corn.
This year it is still raining 6 days a week. We just had 3 days of NO rain, very windy, soil has dried up enough to till. 92° expected today, nights are 65°, this is a good time to plant "except" we have 6 days of rain in the forecast again starting tomorrow.
I always plant 4 rows of corn, 75 seeds per row, seeds spaces 5" apart. 300 ears of G-90 bicolor sweet corn gives up 50 lbs. of kernels in the freezer. If I expect to have only 65% germination then I plant 6 rows of corn. There is no reason to till soil today it will soak up 6 days of rain easier then become quick sand for a week.
Our weather always makes a sudden change from too much rain to no rain at all, then its 100°f every day, no rain for a month, June to Sept. Garden soil is desert for 4 months. I water corn every day then we harvest 50 lbs of G-90 bicolor corn.
