I found this quite helpful

But do remember that a US gallon is smaller, about three and three quarter litres rather than about four and a half in an Imperial gallon. (I thought everything was suposed to be bigger in America)

Their size chart doesn't show any as large as I routinely use... i.e. Hügelkultur containers.

The other thing I found interesting is they recommend growing corn in a 20-gallon size. I'm very skeptical of that due to corn's root system which has seminal and nodal roots that can extend as much as 5 ft in depth.

Going to run a little experiment on growing corn in Hügelkultur containers. I just did my first planting in the garden so now I'll plant in an HK container and compare.

It says to grow indeterminate tomatoes in a 20 gallon container. I have grown them successfully for several years in 5-gallon buckets, and then last year in a 7-gallon fabric planter. They'll be going in the 7-gallon fabric planters again this year. I stake the plants when they're small, and then use galvanized steel fencing as cages. Everything I grow is done in containers because the soil in my backyard is garbage.
