...but I don't have a smartphone, so I can't use any of the three thousand apps that would tell me immediately. I have been battling this stuff for about 35 years. In the lawn and in driveway & sidewalk cracks. (It LOVES those cracks -- even more than crabgrass does.) Note the telltale irregular red dot on the leaves, because it does look like a lot of other plants if you don't see the dot. It's fairly easy to pull out by hand, but in the lawn it puts down a pretty deep root. I used to be able to reasonably keep ahead of it but now it's everywhere, thanks to the little "presents" the deer keep leaving here. (We never used to have deer -- now they're as common as mosquitos.) What makes this weed so problematic is that the tiny tiny flowers are just about invisible, so you can't really tell when it's ready to drop seed -- and it's ready to drop seed way before it's grown long enough to easily pull by hand. Selective broadleaf herbicides (both organic and chemical) do handle it well -- but, again, by the time I can really see it in the lawn, the seeds are already viable...

Funny thing, though -- a lot of the photos that turn up on Google Images make it look like a succulent -- purslane, in particular -- due to the way the stems look in the photos. And it's not. (I have tons of purslane in the patio cracks, too.)

Yeah, that's certainly true. But in this case, almost all the photos on the first page were in fact Spotted Spurge, it's just that the lighting made the stems look shiny. I think they probably used flash when they shot 'em.
