We started some tree seedlings from some seeds that fell from our neighbor's yard with my nieces. What are my next steps? They went through a winter in a pot in the garage and have now come out onto the patio. The leaves have grown on our seedlings. Are they ready to go into the ground? What are some precautions to take? We have three maples and one oak.

They can go in the ground now. First you need to determine the location.

Several important consideration on location. Sun, soil, drainage among them. Root impingement is important factor.

What some fail to account for is looking ahead to the future and how these trees will fit in their environment. Think decades not months or years.

Thank you! So the maples would be near my neighbor's maple. 30-50 feet away. Hers is incredibly healthy so hopefully they take in that area

It's important not to plant your tree seedlings too deep in the soil because you will have problems later. If you look at your neighbor's maple tree root flare, you will see what I'm talking about. Tree root flares are very important, so plant it slightly above the ground to allow the roots to expand. Good luck and keep us posted.
