Why not invest (without your girlfriend's knowledge!) in a sturdy table from a thrift store or Freecycle? Your plants would be off the ground and puppy-safe, and you could tend them more easily.

This is a gardening table my husband built for me--yours needn't be as heavy nor as large but I do love mine (husband and table, in that order)!
