It is all about reading the labels. I don't buy foods if first 3 words are sugar. and I check for sodium also.
I once read that if you buy your foods strictly from the perimeter of the store (ie: produce, fresh meat, dairy and bakery), and leave the inside aisles alone, your diet will be much healthier. There is some truth to that, avoiding processed foods will cut down on sodium and sugar and chemicals, except those bakery goods, but fresh baked bread is better than packaged.

I also heard an old man say he never eats anything that will not spoil in a few days.

Same idea -- fresh fruits, veggies and meat, mostly, without all the chemicals and added sugar/salt.

Even better, of course, grow your own.

"never" , "anything"
Those are the sort of words that put me off, how about honey, cheese and pickle?
We are in the middle of making a years worth of marmalade, won't all get eaten in a few days, but it is only fruit and sugar, no jelling agents, pectin, preservatives, or any of the other additives written on the side of the jar.

Well, sugar in any form causes inflammation, even honey and maple syrup. I got completely off of sugar for a couple of years and experienced a great deal of relief of the arthritis in my my knees and back.

Unfortunately, I have slipped back into my old bad habits and I am suffering the consequences. Hoping to psych myself back into the healthier diet soon.

Nothing is 100%. I was just telling what I heard and read. And everyone's body is different. But lots of people suffer from inflammation in their joints and other parts of their bodies.

As for cheese, in the US it is generally stocked on the perimeter of the store, so presumably it's okay.

The old man may have been exaggerating for effect. Maybe he ate pickles, maybe not. I can't ask him, I'm sure he's dead by now, healthy or not. I was young when I knew him, and now I'm old.

If you want to know my best secret for longevity, I would have to say it's being sure to have a bowel movement every single day. Your body can deal with a lot of crap if you move it on out in a timely manner. In my opinion, best way to do that is to take magnesium oxide pills at bedtime. The number will vary. Start with one. I'm 76, live in a cabin in the woods with no running water, a labor intensive lifestyle. I've learned a thing or two.

We share a lot in common...except the no running water part. :) :)

My nearest neighbor is a mile away (on land I sold him) and there isn't another for several miles...and I grow over 90% of the veggies we consume...by choice.

It's a good way to live in today's world, if you can keep up with it. I'm going to try to sell out in the next year or so, and probably move in with my daughter and son-in-law. Maybe. But they have 9 acres in the country, gardens, orchard, chickens. I don't want to be anywhere near a city.

I am 80 now, my partner's in her late sixties. When we first got together we lived in a coach parked in an orchard for four years, carrying all our water in and collecting and cutting wood for the stove was a fair bit of exercise. The last 35 years or so have been in conventional houses, but we have stayed out of the city, though you can't get far from them in England.

As a neighbor of mine once said, "If we go any further out, we'll be going back in."

Oh, yes, I also do that too. only perimeter food. I am also obtaining better flour to bake with, way less processed.

I've been trying this winter to bake bread again after 40 years, but I lost my old recipe, and it's not turning out very well so far.

I was diagnosed diabetic last year. Something about which I was completely unaware, (it came up in a routine blood test) I take tablets three times a day.
I still eat and drink what I like. But I never use sugar, not even on cereal.
Can't worry about it. I'll be 85 in April.

My coffee intake is one and a half spoonfuls of Nescafé in a mug in the morning (no milk or sugar).
Then the other coffee I have is when I make cappuccinos for us at 11.00am, with chocolate sprinkles and a couple of amaretti biscuits.

With this.

Actually, I do have a coffee out of the machine in the pro shop of my golf club, before we play a round, like I did this morning.
