Hi there,

I'm a self employed gardener (3 years experience) and a client has asked me to start spraying Glyposate around the base of the vines but more importantly he also wants me to use his new mist sprayer (which he's just ordered and goes on the back of the small tractor he has) to spray fungicide on his grape vines (he has around 400 vines) they got powdery mildew pretty quite badly last year. I have a PA1 and PA6 spraying licence for backpack spraying but as yet have never sprayed. I think I would also need to get a PA9 for the mist sprayer.

If I'm honest I'm a little worried as what if there's a problem and somebody near by complains they now have health issues due to my mist spraying.

Does anybody know if my general public liability insurance cover would cover 'commercial mist spraying' and backpack spraying for that matter or would I need specialist insurance?

Cheers.

The joy of being self employed was that I could always walk away if I didn't like something. Doing so means that in the long run you end up doing work you enjoy.

Spraying glyphosate around the base of the vines will be very difficult without it drifting onto the vines. Ideally they should all be covered as glyphosate will either kill or damage them and that's a lot of work with 400 vines. You may then find a claim against you for the loss.

I would take Oliver's advice and walk away from the job. If you need an excuse you could say you haven't got the required qualification to do the job.
