Pole bean problem problem

In mid to late May I direct sowed pole beans, supposedly blue lake stringless. Here we are at the beginning of August and the vines are growing OK but, absolutely no signs of production. No beans, not even blossoms yet.

We have had a couple hot spells but nothing out of the ordinary. I'm aware that the heat will prevent pollination but I've never noticed it preventing flowering. I've had beans in that area before and they produced ok.

I'm thinking dud seeds?

Pole beans are later than bush beans but idk my poles have started already

Could be several things contributing to that.

Pole beans do not need much nitrogen as they fix their own. Too much can inhibit blooms. Hot weather also can inhibit blooming. I see it here above about 85 deg. F and the effect increases as the temps go above that. In combination, nitro w/ heat could be the whole deal.

With cooling temps and all that growth, I would expect you would see blooms very soon. Keep the faith.

Too much nitrogen? Could be, I did spread some blood meal for sunflowers planted with them.

Guess I'll wait and see.

My pole beans just recently started blooming. A week ago there were no blooms yet now there are a lot. I hope to see beans soon.

Im not sure where they came from but I have morning glory growing in my beans.

Might be too much nitrogen in the soil. If you had beans there before they fix nitrogen. I always try to rotate all crops year to year as this also helps to avoid diseases and some crops benefit from the nitrogen. Nothings perfect! Mother Nature sometimes turns a blind eye!

Finally got some blossoms this week and picked the first bean today.

And they're off! Picked a little over a half gallon last night. Momma just rolled her eyes and said she hopes they don't start getting out of hand.

I've had an interesting run this season with some Alabama Lima pole beans. They shut down when the extreme heat hit, but enough were left on the vines that they germinated new plants and are set to produce another crop this fall when temps finally back off some.

Love those bonus crops.
