Considering planting Barrenwort/Epimedium, along with evergreen ferns underneath pine trees - very hard soil area and dry/semi-shade conditions.

Has anyone had good experiences with the following in dry/shady areas?
  • Elephant Ear (Ballawley)
  • Astellia
  • Geranium Macrorrhizum (easily controllable ground cover)
Recommendations/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Consider camillia, japonica. The soil will change somewhat with compost properly. Even so, consider "well drained" hard soil creation challenging to the point that raising root balls into a bed is more succesfull for many plants.
