Nothing wrong with pots.

We've a couple of dozen of 'em, of all different sizes.

If you are new to gardening, what you need is a long term plan if you intend staying in your house for some time.

Don't try to do everything at once.

Start at the area nearest a window that looks out into your garden and gett it how you want it. the view of your progress there, will encourage you to start on the next bit, as and when time and expence will allow.
