Hi! I bought a Japanese Maple over a year ago. I re-potted it into a larger pot than it was in which is quite substantial.

When spring came it started growing it’s leaves slowly, and then they started curling and dying. New leaves grew but also curled and died.

I thought it was overwatering so reduced watering, with no results. I’ve tried watering again and it’s still in poor shape.

The only other explanation I have is the pot is too small and impacting it’s water absorption.

Can anyone please help!

Hi and welcome.

Sorry to hear about your maple.
The problem with these plants is that these days they are usually always grafted and sometimes the rootstock is unable to supply enough water through the graft. I'm not saying that this is definitely the problem, but it could be.

Thank you. When I bought it, it was mature and quite healthy. If it had a grafting issue is there any reason it would it come up now? Do you think a larger pot could help?
