Is where the sun is positioned in the sky at 12 noon considered due south?

Trying to figure out exactly where south is, I've tried a couple of different compass apps both gave different readings and I don't really want to buy a compass just to use once, so is wherever the sun is positioned at 12:00pm due south?

My house faces west north west and it always is fun watching the sunrise and set angles change.

If you're in New Zealand, at mid-day, the sun will be pretty near due North.

A compass is a great tool to have around, and they are cheap. $15 will get you one more than adequate to the task.
