ID Gutter Plant

Thinking about cleaning the gutters as they need it and looked up to see this plant.

Anyone have an ID?

I think you nailed it as Gutterplant. Not very common and extremely variable.

It is likely a tree IMO, possibly Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) which is nearby. Plants that show stamina, toughness, and creativity endear themselves to me. It will be difficult, but I will try to save it.

I found a couple of them on campus today.
The first one is a Swamp Cooler Tree. It was recently cut down to allow better airflow so it won’t get mildew.

The second one got a little dried out during our last heatwave, but it’s cooling down so it should recover.

Pokeweed does seem like a good possibility @Avi ...but it isn't "nasty" to me. On the other hand, it would not be worth heroic efforts to save to me.

Thank you but I grew up eating the young spring shoots as poke sallet. I'm very aware of its bad side.

But the good side is in addition to poke sallet the birds love the berries. Cardinals, mockingbirds, and brown thrashers are particularly fond of those berries as an important food source.
