I want to start by getting my lawn green. I heard about garden soil and nitrogen fertilizer but I don’t know where to begin.

Its not tilling, but rather the multi step process called aeration that what you are wanting to know more about I would think.

The first thing WE need to know is where you are located. And a small word of advice. If those two green bags on the porch are Miracle Grow products take them back if you want a long term beautiful landscape. The second thing WE need to know is what type of grass it is that you have now. Some grasses are dead when they turn brown like St. Augustine, while others, like Bermuda, will turn back to green if proper steps are applied. Depending on where you are located this will not be a fast and finished project.
