Flood resistant plants

I live in an area where flooding occurs around three to four times yearly. Many of the plants would not survive being underwater for more than two days. My mom used to buy potted plants and flowers as well as seedlings during the summer only to have them die from drowning during the rainy season. Now that I'm the one left to tend the garden, I feel it is impractical to keep buying plants every year.

I'm planning to replace the plants with breeds that are more resistant to floods. What can you suggest? I live in a humid area by the way.

I suppose you could build a pond garden. There are a lot of plants that grow in and around water

I agree with Chuck, a pond garden would definitely be a good idea. When I was living in Europe I saw several pond gardens, the most beautiful ones were in the Netherlands, they were a great source of inspiration :)

Thank you for your responses. I do agree that ponds look really nice. We live in a humid tropical region where mosquitoes abound. Would setting up a pond be a good thing, too? How do I keep the pond from turning into a breeding habitat of mosquitoes?

I had not heard of mosquito dunks, so I had to look it up. They can be put in standing water to kill the larva and the dunks are safe to other plants. I have wanted to put a pond in but I have been concerned about the mosquito's now that I know about mosquito dunks I feel better about planning a pond for the yard.
