Sorry, I thought it was black plastic weedblock or sheet plastic. Mulch (dyed bark) is ok.

I have noticed several posts from Australia and New Zealand that have the same red discoloration, but I haven’t been able to find any explanation other than what we have said about environmental extremes. I’ll keep checking around and see if I can find another explanation. Can’t stand an unsolved mystery!
