If someone knew enough about it and could market it, I'm curious to ask if people can make anything farming trees?

Absolutely yes. Many fortunes have been made from timber in East Texas.
Thank you for the reply. I just really like growing things. But its become interesting to think, hey, what possibilities exist now that I can do more than just tomatoes!

:)

Certain areas of Texas have Christmas tree farms and I would think Utah would be an ideal place for certain Xmass trees. Texas is not known for great pine, fir and spruce trees but still they are being grown here. And apparently are a money maker or they wouldn't be doing it.

The US needs a lot more native tree providers right now. More and more people are becoming interested in planting native trees and native shrubs but they aren't the easiest thing to find available. If you were willing to grow true native trees and shrubs that are native to your specific region I'm sure you'd be able to make decent money selling them as long as people know you have them.

Texas requires a Nursery floral license for selling plants and a phytosanitary certificate for shipping out of state. Also, a state tax number for reporting income. These laws keeps common folks from doing what you want to do. To sell trees you got to get state certified.

The Utah Nursery Act requires a nursery license for anyone offering nursery stock for sale at a nursery or nursery outlet. Plus there are specific regulations for tree size and laws that protect copyrights. Its easy to get in trouble if you don't know what you are doing because of copyrights.

If you are really interested in horticulture, hook up with someone that's already in the business and learn how to get your certification. It takes a some education and hard work growing and selling trees legally and there's good money in it. Good luck friend.

Thanks for the reply.

Its already hard work though just to garden or grow anything. I don't see those guys as doing anything special.

And in some cases paperwork and bureaucracy make it worse. Like I just came from tilling my aunt's garden with the tiller. I tilled it 4 inches deep (it was a mini-tiller that could only go about that deep.) But last year she had to pay a service to do it who had all that paperwork stuff and they only went an inch deep and charged her double what I did.

I appreciate what you said, and you calling us your friends was wonderful. Hopefully there will be more people like you around in our futures.

Agree with @oneeye but it can also be done without formal training or any hard work.

Example, about 20 years ago I purchased a large tract of clear-cut land that joined my ranch. About 20 acres of that tract was on the other side of the creek from me and not very accessible. So, I planted it in loblolly pine trees.

Today that 20 acres has all marketable timber...without any work on my part, just Nature.
The value is estimated to be about $185k above the purchase cost 20 year ago.

Do that on a large scale and one could be talking about real money. 🤠

Farming trees, often referred to as agroforestry or tree farming, can indeed be a profitable venture if executed well. This practice involves growing trees for various purposes such as timber, fruit, nuts, or even biofuel. The profitability depends on several factors including the type of trees, the climate, soil quality, and market demand.

For example, timber trees like oak or pine have long growth cycles but can yield significant returns when harvested. Fast-growing species like poplar or eucalyptus can be harvested more frequently and are used for products like paper or veneers. Additionally, fruit or nut trees can generate annual income once they start producing.

Non-timber forest products (NWFPs) like mushrooms, medicinal plants, or ginseng can also be cultivated alongside trees, diversifying income streams.

Marketing is crucial for success. Developing relationships with buyers and understanding market trends help in selling the products at competitive prices. Certification, such as organic or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) labels, can add value to the produce.

Overall, with proper planning, sustainable practices, and effective marketing, tree farming can be a worthwhile endeavor both environmentally and economically. It also contributes positively to carbon sequestration and biodiversity, making it an impactful business choice.
