These coneflowers are self sown seedlings and it looks like there are two different varieties. One that is purple and one that is more red like tomato soup.

We planted what I thought was a hybrid coneflower called tomato about 5 years ago and I thought it had died out or reverted back to the purple of one of its parents. Reverting is very common among hybrid coneflowers. Yet it looks to my eyes like they are tomato red. Now I'm thinking it wasn't a hybrid or it was labeled hybrid in order to deter people from saving the seeds.

I would like to hear anyone else's opinion.

They self seeded but do they look like a different color to you? The leaves and plant itself is a darker green than the purple ones.

I have planted an orange coneflower. The first year it came back as orange. Since then there has been no orange coneflower.

From what I understand, most of the hybrid echinacea can revert back to the purple or the color of a non hybrid parent. It's why I don't buy hybrid coneflowers anymore.
