Read this article and I have the impression that aligning the feed chemistry into a more workable vertical integration could unleash a lot of high quality composted cow manure. Right now the problem with manure build up seems to be the chemicals fed for things I did not expect, such as insect control. Yes, I just said we eat beef that they feed pesticide. So much room for improvement. For example, if they made organic fertilizer from it I feel like there would be a fertilzer market and the feedlots could have less flies as a result of moving what is becoming a desirable commodity in an increasingly organically oriented world. Black Kow is a wonderful product but too expensive. Some small changes in feedlot methods could change that price lower.

I often thought that our herd must be building up toxins drinking water from all our dugouts. Those ponds filled up each spring from snow runoff that flows over all the surrounding area, area used to raise crops and of course treated with herbicides each year.
We didn't notice a fly problem in our feedlot though, of course it only operated during the fall, winter and spring. Dad would send out buyers and then when the deals were made with the farmers a week later a few rigs full of feeder calves would arrive and all hell would break loose.
We only fed those feeders a chop of molasses and grain and our own hay crop. They drank well water all winter and were sold once fattened up so never had dugout water.
