I do appreciate reading about the pros and cons of peat and sphagnum moss even though they are only ever used in pot plants here.
Mushroom compost is widely available, and I can get five cubic meters of that delivered in a truck to my driveway. That has fertility but some pH problems.

I should remind people that whilst I'm in drought mode - if I drive for ten hours northwards I get to Townsville in northern Queensland where it is tropical and currently 700mm of rain has fallen in 24 hours. So, my advice is local and doesn't even apply to all of Australia.

It's actually more like a ten-day drive to Townsville.

That is very interesting to me. I tried mushroom compost here...Once.

My delivered product included used condoms, medical supplies, and other unspeakables...that was only what was visible to my eye.

Honestly, I was shocked. I swore never again.

I bring nothing in... absolutely nothing. I have a closed system to the extent possible. I raise cattle, they provide income and more importantly to me superior organic matter that I compost. I raise legumes like Sunn Hemp which when combined with catle manure and composted produces the finest garden soil amendment I have ever experienced. I raise fish in ponds. In addition to food, they also provide extremely high content garden amendments. I capture rainwater...etc, etc. I do purchase some seed externally but mostly rely on my own internally. That is just the way I roll.

Brilliant. Awesome.
I trust my local landscape supplier and they have never let me down. My chickens do provide some of my compost ingredients but the whole vegetable garden is only half an acre.

Thank you...and I'm convinced it is the only way to live for me and my family in this time. Well over 90% of our veggie food comes from the garden. Nutrient dense food, only.

Oh, let me add, I trust no one when it comes to external inputs into this system. I've been burned once too many times.
