Last weekend I transplanted a handful of sunflowers to the garden, plants were 8-10" tall. All but 1 are looking good at this time and I think I might have found out why.

I found a potato sprout next to the sickly looking sunflower. Had no idea there was a potato still in the soil after last year.

Are they known combatants?

They are about as incompatible as two plants can be. Both are heavy feeders. Sunflowers are alleopatic. Sunflowers are prone to having the fungal problems that harm potatoes.

Bad combo.

I always seem to have a couple of potato volunteers and I let them grow. What other plants might be affected by potatoes?

We get volunteers of all sorts of stuff, looks like a cabbage sprout from a seed that didn't germinate last year. Usually all sorts of random tomatoes, a handful of potatoes and dill are common.
