Back yard needs some help

I bought a house that has a retaining wall in the back yard. The top is roughly 5 feet from the house. It is in mostly shade. I am looking for ideas on how to fill the space. I am open to anything so any help is most appreciated. I am great at the planting and organizing but last the design skills. Thanks for the ideas.

Photos would help. I am imagining something for your description but it would be good to see a picture. How high is the retaining wall? Are you interested in something that would spill over the retaining wall?
