I grow Hass avocado's, does anyone here grow a different variety, what sort of results do you get with them? Also do you have any pest problems, if you do how to you mitigate the issue?

Not exactly sure which type of avacados I grow. I'm currently in the founding stage of growing it (tooth pics and cup of water!). Anyways, they've been sitting in water (proper set up) for the past month and a bit and haven't grown at all! One of them looks the exact same as the day I found it, and the other one is split open at the bottom but not growing any roots. Can anybody explain that? Does it usually take longer to begin growing roots?

It takes anywhere between two months to four months for the seed to start put ting out roots.. but the fact that one has split open means you will soon see some young leaves and later a few roots.. just make sure that the bottom of the seed is always touching the water.. so keep filling up the cup.
I am positive that you will soon see new growth.

I have tried doing that, too, and it never seems to work out for very long for me. I have gotten them to start sprouting, but then they suddenly stop/die/mold. I don't really know how to keep them going.

If the leaves begin to yellow, amend the soil with iron. If the climate is humid, watch for fungus problems like white mildew, scab and cercospora spot.

A Hass avocado seedling will take 10 to 15 years to produce fruit.

My parents have avocados and they are having problem with keeping it on the tree. What I am trying to say is, the fruits would fall even if they are too small yet. They won't last there, they keep on falling. The tree is rich and abundant with avocado fruits, but just one blow of the wind, the fruits will fall off. They seldom arrive to a ripe one, or at least to a big one. Any of you have the same situation?

I love avocados ! I have looked at the toothpick idea for sprouting them, but have never tried it. I just read the post that said it would be 10-15 years before it produced an avocado , so I guess we would pretty much just be growing one as a houseplant here in Alabama. I doubt that it could winter outside, but even then, it is a long time to wait for fruit.
If you just plant the seed, will they ever sprout that way, or do you have to put them in the water with toothpicks to get one to sprout ?

I don't grow avocados but I absolutely love them. Does anyone grow them organically? I heard it is not as bad to choose to grow them using conventional methods because they have a fairly thick skin. Still, like most fruit and veg, growing organically gets the best flavour, it also depends on the soil of course too, and other factors.

I never had success using the water and toothpick method. Then I read that you could start them straight in soil by pushing the rounded side into the soil and leaving the pointed side above ground. Since then I've had four seeds germinate successfully.

I have had my tree for 3 years now and it was started using the toothpicks and water method. When the tree reaches about 6" in height it needs to be planted in a pot with some soil in order to continue growing properly.

I know the toothpick method does work, but most of the time I just get a dud that never sprouts and just sits there until the water dissolves the seed. I have tried it three times with no good results, I guess I will keep trying and never give up.

Oh I wish I could grow them here but the climate is too mild. Avacados are so good for you, but they cost over a dollar each at the grocery store so I don't get them very often. I evny those of you who get to grow them!

What kind of climate does an avocado need to grow? I love to eat them! Do they grow on trees or bushes? I am assuming trees.
