IMHO the bad move was when we went off the gold standard. We used to have sterling silver coins still in circulation when I was a boy, 5/- to a ounce, so £1 was four ounces of silver. That was a four hundred percent increase since the Middle Ages when £1 was a pound of silver. Four ounces would cost you the best part of £100 today, maybe seventy years later.
