That high pitched buzz that always sounds like your childhood summer is caused by that bug. It is a Cicada and usually pretty harmless to gardens.

They can cause a deafening din .. in the summer! Oh, my gawd .. I hated them with a vengeance.. The din rang in my ears ... Look at it now, I find it quite pretty .. at least, no noise from this fella!

Gotta say, they are quite intimidating critters.....especially if you've never seen one. They also leave their discarded exoskeletons stuck to trees and other surfaces, and in a "good" year it can look like an alien invasion.
