Advice on First Flowers

Hello! I am new to gardening, and I need some advice. I have a spot outside my Boston apartment with full sun, and I can fit a 24" x 8" x 8" container there. I looked into different flowers and other ornamentals that might flourish together in the container, but it was a little overwhelming for a newbie.

Does anyone have advice on 2 or 3 ornamentals that would thrive together in a container in a sunny spot in the 6b zone? Thanks!
